PowderCoating Jewelry with Audrey Laine Sawyer
February 27th & 28th, 2027
Discover a vibrant new way to add color to your metalsmithing practice! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to apply powder coating to metal using finely ground pigment and resin that is heat-set in a toaster oven. The result is a durable, colorful finish available in a huge range of colors—perfect for jewelry and other small-scale metalwork.
Students will explore several powder-coating application techniques, including using a powder-coating gun, sifting, hot dipping, and painting. You’ll also learn how to prepare your metal and experiment with different approaches to create unique finishes.
New to metalsmithing? You’ll have the opportunity to learn basic skills such as cutting, soldering, and forming as you create your pieces.
Experienced metalsmith? Bring finished pieces, works in progress, or an assortment of metal objects and samples to experiment with powder coating. This is a great opportunity to explore how color can transform your existing work.
Students can expect to leave with 1–2 + finished pieces, along with the knowledge and confidence to incorporate powder coating into their own artistic practice.
Materials: A $30 materials kit includes several metal blanks to get you started, plus use of all powder-coating colors provided by the instructor. Additional metals will be available for purchase as needed.
